>> CARD EXPO EAST AFRICA 2006 REVIEW

The conference which was the main highlight of the event hosted a lot of expert speakers from around the globe. Notable among the speakers are representatives from reputable international companies, and experts in the global industry from Russia, United Kingdom, South Africa, Nigeria etc.

The idea of electronic cards seem very fascinating and quite appropriate for the East African market but appears to be very daunting for the card operators with issues of cost, strategy, risks and technicalities starring hard at their faces. Industry players that would ordinarily love to take the big leap into· the e-banking space tread with caution as the burden of these issues trail them on the path of payments.

However the Cards East Africa 2006 helped to shine a light of hope using the high quality packaged conference with a host of international speakers to draw analysis of the global payment industry and comparing it with the East African market and proffering easy to use methods and strategy from similar economies. Also conference attendees were introduced to more economical and effective technologies and possible growth areas for the region.

Participants at the conference learnt first hand from the experiences of industry players from around the globe. Feedback from participants indicate that new knowledge and information was acquired and exposure to the realities and prospects in the region which will prepare attendees to better position for the next milestone of the industry particularly in the region.

Attendees were also conducted round a technical tour of the exhibition stands of Prism and Trak cards that had on display latest technologies for the card and e-payment industry. All the way from South Africa, Prism displayed Pos terminals of all sizes and capabilities, affordable, portable and functional. Trak Cards Inc of Kenya surprised visitors with the advanced technology that smartcards can be put to use at quite affordable rates without the complexities perceived to be associated with the smartcard technology.

The exhibition encouraged the forging of new relationships. Old relationships were also renewed and there was nothing better than seeing the smiling and satisfied faces of attendees as new businesses opened up to them.
