As a result of current development in the card industry around Africa, CardExpo Africa 2008 has been packaged as a special edition which will co-locate with iD Identification as a specialized exhibition on Identification.

Financial systems all over the world are changing rapidly. The inclination is to move more towards e-payment. This development has since become very critical for the whole of Africa, thus the need for urgent action.

Goldman Sachs in a recent report indicated that the economies and financial systems of some African countries will overtake those of some developed countries by 2025 (This is what has been adjusted by many countries as their 2020 vision). To achieve this, there must be a robust and vibrant integrated financial system that will power the growth and propel economies in Africa to the next level. Banks and financial institutions now, more than ever before, need to build cross-border channels, e-banking and e-payment infrastructure that will constantly generate sustainable superior performance even in the face of an increasingly competitive environment.

Consequently, CardExpo Africa 2008 has been uniquely designed and packaged to focus on how Africa can win in this movement towards developing the African renaissance by instituting financial systems hinged on robust cross-border electronic payment models. This year’s conference has therefore been tagged “Winning Ways Africa Conference” with the theme: “Succeeding with Cards Profitably”.

The objective of “Winning Ways Africa Conference” is to share experiences, and compare notes amongst major economies globally with a view to developing viable strategies for electronic payment systems across Africa.

We are just thirteen years to 2020. This can be tempting, when predicting the future by veering to the extremes to foresee either maximum change or none at all. Thirteen years ago was boom time for prepaid Phone Cards, but that market has now been completely taken over by Sim Cards. Think about Contact-less today, think about ID, and think about Internet, USB Tokens, convergence between Telecoms, Payment and Internet Services. Some people say that very little may happen in Africa, others think that almost anything can happen.
